The Civil Guard immobilized transport of 25,000 kilos of Portuguese pine (19/01/2009)

January 19, 2009.

Service agents Nature Conservation (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil de Murcia, immobilized on Thursday, January 15, in the so-called "OPERATION MADEIRA", 25,000 kilos pine from Portugal and had as target their use in the production process of a local commercial Aguilas.

The transport was stopped at one of the gateways to the public of the Association Patrol Traffic Civil Guard, noting that the cargo consisted of pine wood of Portuguese origin, spent SEPRONA notice.

After verifying that the wood was covered by the mandatory plant passport ensuring medical treatment against the pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), we proceeded to precautionary quarantine.

Plant Protection Services of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water of the Autonomous Community, which was visited in his place at the request of SEPRONA confirmed the precautionary quarantine of wood waiting to be credited properly that it received the corresponding treatment ensuring their health.

For its part, the staff of the Directorate-General for Natural Heritage and Biodiversity took samples to check the possible suffering of the plague in the frozen wood.

La Guardia Civil and autonomic inspectors have verified also the target company's facilities charge, where they were found a million kilos of wood Portugal itself initially meets the requirements of the legislation in the matter, so we think that, in principle, that trade is not responsible for the violations uncovered in the transportation assets.

The action is part of the Plan to combat diseases caused by known as "pine wood nematode, launched by the Civil Guard in the entire country because of the collaboration request has been received from the authorities on plant health, to address the serious threat posed by this disease to the mountains of the European Union, and whose existence is documented at this time in Portugal.

This is one of the first operational actions, and in any case, the first time to discover illegal transport of pine Portuguese as important dimensions to such a long distance from that country.
