The health of the almost 800 pines that the municipality of Águilas has is of great importance for the aquiline consistory.
For this reason, a preventive treatment was carried out months ago on all specimens with specific products, which are not harmful to trees or to people or pets.
Now, from the concessionaire company STV Gestión, work continues on the total eradication of this caterpillar, Thaumetopea pityocamba, in localized foci.
The system that is currently used is based on qualified personnel who act manually in those places where a possible 'bag' of these annoying lories is detected.
Known for their traditional way of going in single file, this year has had to act more intensively after the anomalous months of high temperatures in December and January.
Also, to prevent specimens having these annoying bags have been made novel treatments such as endotherapy.
This technique, carried out by professionals equipped with all the necessary safety measures and preventive equipment, consists of introducing a substance into the trunk of the pine to prevent these caterpillars from growing on it.
Aguilas currently has a higher concentration of pines in different green areas, among others:
• 65 at the College Europe
• 68 in the natural environment 'Molino del saltaor'
• 45 at the Castillo San Juan de Águilas
• 68 at Colegio Las Lomas
• 84 in the Labradorcillo Industrial Estate
The preventive action of the almost 800 pines available to the municipality has made it possible to affirm that the appearance of these caterpillars has been much lower than in other years, and its incidence is localized.
Even so, the concession company has a rapid action team for specific cases.
