The Platform in Defense of the Railroad of the Region of Murcia considers it unheard of that the Mayor of Águilas calls for the suppression of railway services (31/07/2020)

| The councilor attributes to the train a high risk of contagion from COVID-19 | The Platform in Defense of the Railroad of the Region of Murcia describes as very unfortunate the declarations made by the maximum councilor of Aguila, Mrs.

Mª Carmen Moreno Pérez, in which she requests the suppression of the railway services popularly known as the Tren de Baños, service of reinforcement of the Murcia - Águilas line, used by people who choose a sustainable mode of travel for the summer season. The group wants to remind the Mayor of the historical connection between her city and the railway, enjoying the season, an almost unusual occurrence in Spanish municipalities, while also having workshops for the railway industry, even more unusual and which undoubtedly grants to Águilas a special status within the railway map of the country as a whole. The Railroad Defense Platform considers that the mayor has suffered a lapse by attributing a high risk to the train in the phenomenon of the Covid-19 contagion, especially if we consider that the transport of people is carried out, at the moment, in Spain, 80 percent by road, and only 10 percent by rail.

The rest by plane and boat. This group wants to remember that we live in a scenario of climate change, generated by greenhouse gases caused by the burning of fossil fuels, which is the type of energy consumed in cars, motorcycles, planes and ships, so betting on transport public, such as the railway, is a clear commitment to minimize the effects caused by climate change. For the Platform, requesting the suppression of railway services implies betting on the isolation of the municipality and entails despising sustainable mobility and turning its back on urgent measures that must be addressed in the fight against climate change.Likewise, they remember that the "bath train" is an option that citizens of a region with almost a million and a half inhabitants have to access the beach directly by rail.

Limiting access to a municipality like Águilas solely and exclusively to the road is not betting on the future. This group also requests the City Council of Águilas to join the demands for the modernization of the road to Almendricos, where it would connect with the Mediterranean corridor, thus placing the municipality in the future in one of the main railway axes of the Basic European Railway Network .
