Today the World Environment Day is commemorated under the motto, in this 2020, of the protection of biodiversity.
There are currently approximately eight million species on Earth, each living in a unique ecosystem.
Each member of this biodiversity plays a fundamental role in the natural balance.
Recent events, such as the unprecedented forest fires in Brazil, California, and Australia, the locust invasion in the Horn of Africa, and now the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrate the intertwined relationship between humanity and the webs of life in which we live.
Nature is sending us a message that we cannot ignore. World Environment Day is, above all, a global platform to inspire positive change, and is based on the precept that global change requires a global community.
In this sense, the mayor of the area, Ginés Desiderio Navarro, has indicated that "aware of the importance of preserving our Environment and Biodiversity, from the City of Águilas we are working on the development of projects such as the tri-national (Spain, Latvia and Portugal ) LIFE Adaptate, within the framework of which we are creating a new green area of ??25,000 m2 irrigated with purified and chlorinated water powered by solar energy, and creating a common European methodology so that each locality can prepare its Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy (PACES),that we have just finished preparing and that we will present for approval to the municipal plenary this month.
Similarly, we have recently approved our incorporation into the Spanish Network of Cities for Climate and the Spanish Network for Sustainable Development, as well as the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network "- concluded the mayor.
