The creation of a 30,000-meter forest park, among the actions of the Life Project to adapt to climate change (15/03/2019)

The mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, and the mayor of Local Development, Ginés Desiderio Navarro, yesterday presented the project to create a green area, whose irrigation will be carried out with purified water, taking place the impulsion and distribution of the same through photovoltaic energy

An initiative included in the Life Adaptation Project of adaptation to climate change, which Águilas, together with the City Councils of Cartagena and Lorca, the Municipal Chambers of Mértola and Alfândega da Fé (Portugal) and the Municipality of Smiltene (Latvia), is part of.

The action - according to Moreno - will be carried out in two phases, the first one, which will start imminently, will allow the installation of an irrigation system taking advantage of the water coming from the treatment plant.

An irrigation system that, in a second phase, will make possible the creation of an autochthonous forest park of 30,000 square meters that represents some of the existing bioclimatic floors in the Region.

"The main objective of this pilot action is the adaptation at the local level to climate change, in this case through an action that makes possible the generation of shade, the decrease in temperature and the conservation of humidity, to apply this experience later in other European areas, "explained the mayor.

Also, this forest park, which will also play the role of informative pedagogical space, will have a bicycle lane, a network of roads and paths, as well as various ponds and ramblizo areas that will favor, not only the proliferation of certain plant species, but also also of own fauna of these spaces.

The Life Adaptate Program is completed with the commitment of the City Council to carry out the measures of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, specifically the preparation and execution of a Plan of Action for Climate and Sustainable Energy (PACES) address both mitigation and climate adaptation before 2030. The main objective of Life Adaptate is to contribute to the improvement of policies and legislation related to mitigation and adaptation to climate change in the European Union.

In particular, the process of designing and implementing local adaptation policies and designing specific actions in each municipality, addressing the challenges that arise in each municipality.
