Ecologists in Action warns of pollution by agricultural burns in Águilas (26/10/2018)

The burning of stubbles and other plant debris on farms in Aguilas, continues to generate large clouds of smoke that end up reaching and affecting the population, explain from Ecologists in Action.

In recent days, they denounce, there have been several major episodes of pollution, and regret that they are not isolated or specific cases, but respond to a common practice throughout the year, referring to the burning, so that the need to address this type of pollution in the region is evident, because it is a matter of public health.

From the environmental organization remember that smoke is a pollutant, composed of different gases and particles, which "harms the health of the exposed population, with effects that can range from headache, eye and respiratory irritation, hoarseness, cough, respiratory problems and asthma attack, to more acute crises among the population suffering from some type of previous respiratory problem ".

Ecologists in Action recalls that there are viable alternatives to burning, such as shredding and composting, and regret that although the burning of plant waste is not allowed by the waste law, this type of practice is still allowed despite the fact that it is having effects harmful to the population exposed to the dense clouds of smoke that are generated.

For the environmental organization, both the City of guilas and the Autonomous Community, have the responsibility to prevent and avoid situations of this type and prioritize the protection of the health of the population on any other type of considerations.
