A new recovery plan manages to 'bring back to life' numerous eagles palms (19/09/2018)

The Águilas City Council is committed to saving on spending while also focusing on the recovery and enhancement of its green areas.

For this reason, it has been possible to recover numerous palms Washingtonia filifera (Washingtonia of California) that were very affected by fungi.

A recovery that has its origins in the treatments that the City Council and the company STV Gestión have been doing since last April.

In them, thanks to the visual check of a specialist, were detected in different palm trees in the area, fungal problems and immediately launched a special plan consisting of a fumigation treatment with specific products and leaving these without any pruning .

Something that - remember from the concessionary company STV- was made to avoid that this fungus could be extended and end the health of these and other palm trees.

"Once the high effectiveness of this treatment has been demonstrated in the palm trees, saving many of them from an almost certain death, it is when a second action plan has been carried out that it has included an adequate pruning to make the palms have their most characteristic shape, "explained the mayor of Business Rendering Services, Isabel Fernandez.

After the pruning given to these specimens, a new action plan has been started, again under supervision, to maintain the health and stability of these specimens.

The issue of pruning palm trees needs qualified professionals who know how to distinguish their situation and see the possible treatments that must be done since "the correct and proper pruning of any plant or tree is affected the growth and health of this. In the case of palms, they should always be pruned with an oval or circular silhouette, "added Fernández.

Contrary to what is popularly believed, it is wrong to think that the palms should be cut, eliminating almost all of their leaves since, according to the technicians, in ideal conditions the palms Washingtonia filifera (Washingtonia of California) must have between 120 to 180 leaves or palms, with an estimated life of between five and eight years.
