The Minister of Agriculture and Water in office, Adela Martinez-Cache, today stressed the importance of public-private partnerships in developing improved food products "to have greater acceptance in the market" varieties.
The owner of Agriculture acting made the remarks during his visit this morning to the experimental farm La Pilica Eagles, accompanied by the acting mayor of Eagle, Bartolome Hernandez, and the Councillor for Agriculture in functions, Francisco Navarro, where the Ministry , through Murciano Research Institute and Agricultural Development and Food (imide), experiment with 47 traditional varieties of tomato, from its genebank.
Martinez-Cache explained that "comes to assessing the quality of each of these traditional varieties to recover those that have outstanding nutritional value and good yields".
He stressed "the value they have the results of these tests for industry professionals, who will incorporate them into his productions improving the economic performance of their crops."
He also noted that traditional indigenous varieties recovered "offer the possibility for local industry professionals to market a unique product without competition in the market."
The experimental farm La Pilica has an area of ​​52,000 square meters and is equipped with greenhouse crops outdoors and a regulating reservoir of 8,000 cubic meters capacity.
The center is managed by the company technicians Coáguilas and with the active participation of researchers IMIDA and the Center for Soil Science and Applied Segura (CEBAS) Biology as well as Fecamur and several private sector.
The acting head of Agriculture and Water also visited the premises of the cooperative Eagles Golf, Coáguilas, mainly engaged in the marketing of tomatoes, lettuce and peaches, and generates more than 150 direct jobs.
