The City Council is launching a technique that will rejuvenate more than 50,000 meters of grass (05/03/2018)

The gardens and green areas have an extra attraction: the spaces with grass.

Therefore, the City of Águilas has decided to enhance the value and use of these places.

The objective is to scarify the lawn, or in other words: to improve it superficially with a machine to eliminate and break what is known as 'felt'.

"With the passage of time, different traces of dirt, roots and leaves accumulate on the lawn, which forms a kind of putty that prevents 'food' such as water or fertilizer from reaching the roots and which is not As strong as it should be, it can also lead to the appearance of fungi, a situation that is going to be totally solved thanks to the actions we have planned ", explains the aquiline mayor of Companies and Services, Isabel Fernández.

The machine, known as a scarifier, allows a vertical cut to be introduced so that the base of the lawn is aerated and ready for later fertilization and re-dressing.

Some works that include the manual collection of the remains with a 'palm', and, in case there is any trace, is carried out in a mechanical way the withdrawal with a lawn mower with an exclusive design approved for these works.

The goal of all this, explains Fernandez, is to get the grass to be used throughout the summer and have a firmness and roots that allow its enjoyment by all aquilines.

Águilas currently has more than 50,000 square meters of grass, distributed, among others, in these spaces:

• Residential Los Jardines, more than 7500 m ²

• Plaza del Rubial III, more than 5700 m ²

• Immediate surroundings of La Loma chimney, more than 5000 m ²

• Doctor Clemente Square, more than 4000 m ²

• Molineta Garden, more than 3000 m ²

• Jardines Montemar, almost 2000 m ²

Once the vertical cuts are made, sand and organic matter can be introduced in a simple way that will allow the lawn to grow strong and healthy.

These improvement tasks are carried out during the spring, just at the end of winter, and later in autumn, especially in those places where a dense layer of felt is formed by the intense movement through these green areas.
