The Communist Party proposes the putting into value for cultural purposes of the anti-air shelter known as Cueva de la Tía Petra (20/12/2018)

The aquiline nucleus of the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) proposes the recovery of the anti-air shelter of the civil war known as Cueva de la Tía Petra for its value as a cultural and historical asset.

In the vicinity of the train station, we find one of the most important material testimonies of the civil war in Águilas.

It is the anti-air shelter popularly known as Cueva de la Tía Petra.

"Despite its historical relevance, it is completely abandoned, thus condemning to oblivion the crude history it entails," says Pedro Javier López, a member of the Aquiline Communist Party.

In recent months, the City of Águilas has announced the recovery of three bunkers of the civil war that still survive in our municipality.

From the PCE "congratulate" this initiative and ask "extend it" to the Cave of the Tía Petra.

"We ask for your recovery and value, musealizing the space as a place of remembrance of that which should never be forgotten, of the drama of civil war."

"La Cueva de la Tía Petra is a symbol of one of the most traumatic episodes in the history of the town of Águilas, a faithful reflection of the bombing that the Italian fascist aviation carried out on Aguilas on August 3 and 31, 1938".

The result of these attacks were 31 deaths and a total of 70 wounded, of which some were mutilated or died days later.

"We are facing a war crime, because the bombing was carried out against the civilian population and not against a war goal," says Pedro Javier López.

"We must not allow the memory of those 31 aquilines assassinated vilely by fascism to fall into oblivion."

Therefore, in addition, the Communist Party proposes to place a plaque with their names at the entrance of the refuge, once it is rehabilitated.

"By valuing the environment of the Cueva de la Tía Petra, we not only do justice to the memory of the victims of the bombing, but we also recover a part of our history and contribute to the development of cultural tourism in our municipality," they conclude from the PCE.
