The Civil Guard investigates a neighbor of Ãguilas for the crime of abandoning animals (28/07/2018)

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia, in collaboration with the Local Police of Águilas, has developed an operation aimed at prosecuting alleged crimes against domestic animals in Águilas, which has resulted in the discovery of a dog in deplorable hygienic sanitary conditions. and food, as well as the investigation of its owner, who has been instructed diligences as alleged author of relative to the protection of flora, fauna and domestic animals, for animal abandonment.

The Local Police of Aguilas received several complaints for an alleged crime of animal abandonment in the aquiline municipality so, within the framework of collaboration between both bodies, as well as veterinary technical staff of the City of Águilas, were transferred to the Protection Service of Nature for the opening of the corresponding investigation.

In the denunciations it was made clear that in a plot of an urbanization of the aquiline municipality there was a dog with evident symptoms of abandonment on the part of its owner.

Apparently, the dog had several wounds on the back, deformation in his legs and excessively long nails that prevented him from walking freely through the plot where he was.

Thanks to citizen collaboration, the animal has been able to survive since it has been providing food and water for long periods of time.

The veterinary services of the Águilas City Council have certified the seriousness of the state of health and attention of the dog, requesting that it be attended to without delay because it is considered that its life could be in danger.

The investigations made allowed the civil guards to identify the owner of the dog in poor condition, being able to verify also that he spent long periods of time without visiting the animal.

Once all the necessary evidence has been obtained, the Civil Guard has located and investigated the person responsible for the dog, who has been instructed to act as an alleged offender regarding the protection of flora, fauna and domestic animals, due to animal abandonment.

The perpetrators of this type of crime may incur the crime related to the protection of flora, fauna and domestic animals due to mistreatment or animal abandonment, typified in the current Penal Code and punished with three months and one day penalties. year of imprisonment, and special disqualification from one year and one day to three years for the exercise of the profession, trade or trade that is related to animals, as well as for their possession.

In addition, Law 6/2017, of November 8, Protection and Defense of Pets of the Region of Murcia, also states that it will be the obligation of the keeper to provide food and basic veterinary care and veterinary treatments declared mandatory that, in each case, are required and provide preventive, palliative or curative animals that are essential to maintain good sanitary status.

The investigated and the diligences instructed have been made available to the Court of Instruction of Lorca (Murcia).

Campaign against the mistreatment and abandonment of domestic animals #YoSiPuedoContarlo

With the main objective of raising awareness among citizens to promote the necessary measures in protection, management and welfare for domestic animals, as well as to denounce those behaviors contrary to animal welfare of which they are aware, the Civil Guard initiated the past July 29 the campaign # YoSiPuedoContarlo.La Guardia Civil has detected an increase in citizen awareness, not only through formal complaints, but also among users of social networks, as evidenced by the fact that one of the issues that most interaction generated in our followers of Twitter and Facebook is the request of citizen collaboration to clarify crimes of mistreatment towards animals.

The second objective of this campaign is to raise awareness among the population that having an animal is a great responsibility and that animal abandonment is punishable under the current Penal Code.
